President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called for a thorough investigation into Tuesday's violent demonstration at the North Sumatra Legislative Council building which resulted in the death of the council's chairman, a presidential spokesmman said.
The president had summoned Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto and National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri on Tuesday evening to discuss the incident, presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said here Wednesday.
"The president asked the minister and the police chief to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. He requested that the law be enforced to prevent similar incidents from happening elsewhere," Mallarngeng said.

The president had not set a certain time frame for the completion of the investigation, he added.
The president had also instructed the national police chief to enforce the law when any criminal act proved to have been committed in the case, and to take measures to ensure that acts of violence would not be committed at other places symbolizing the state's sovereignty in the future.
Mallarangeng said the president regretted the violence that had happened at the North Sumatra Legislative Council (DPRD) building and stressed that nobody was immune to the law.
"Democracy is not freedom to become lawless. Democratic freedom cannot be made an excuse to disturb law and order," Mallarangeng quoted the president as saying. (*)(nabilputri from antara )COPYRIGHT © 2009
